There's a persistent belief that when it comes to air conditioning, more tonnage is safer. Buy the bigger unit, the thinking goes, and you'll never be caught short on a hot day. In Dana Point and along the Orange County coast, that instinct causes more problems than it solves.
An oversized air conditioner cools the space to setpoint quickly and then shuts off. That sounds efficient, and it isn't. Dehumidification happens over the length of a cooling cycle, so a system that satisfies the thermostat in eight minutes never runs long enough to pull moisture out of the air. You get a house that's cold and clammy at the same time — and near the water, humidity is exactly the thing you're trying to manage.
Short cycling also destroys equipment. Compressor starts are the hardest thing a system does, drawing several times running amperage each time. A unit that starts and stops constantly accumulates that wear far faster than one that runs longer, steadier cycles.
So what actually drives the calculation? Square footage matters, but it's one input among many: insulation levels, window area and glazing type, orientation and shading, ceiling height, air infiltration, and internal heat loads from people and equipment. A coastal Dana Point home with ocean exposure and significant west-facing glass calculates very differently from an identical floor plan two miles inland with mature shade.
Coastal siting adds a second consideration: what you install and where. Salt air is relentless on condensers. Placing the unit where it gets some shelter from prevailing marine wind, specifying corrosion-resistant coil coatings, and committing to a real rinse-and-clean schedule adds years to equipment life on the coast.
