Most people hire an HVAC contractor for the first time on the worst possible day — the system is down, it's 90 degrees, and the deciding factor becomes whoever answers the phone. That's how you end up paying twice: once for a guess, and again for the actual repair.
Here are the five questions worth asking before you commit.
1. How will you diagnose the problem? A real answer sounds technical: checking superheat and subcooling, static pressure, amp draw across the compressor and motors. A vague answer — 'we'll take a look and see' — usually means parts will get swapped until something works, on your dime.
2. Will you size the replacement, or match what's there? Matching the existing tonnage is the lazy default, and it perpetuates whatever mistake was made the first time. An oversized system short-cycles, never dehumidifies properly, and wears out early. A proper load calculation takes into account square footage, insulation, window area, orientation, and internal loads.
3. What's your experience with coastal equipment? This matters specifically in Newport Beach. Salt air corrodes condenser coils, seizes fan motors, and destroys fasteners at a rate you simply don't see even a few miles inland. A contractor who works the coast regularly will bring it up before you do — and will recommend coil treatment and a real cleaning schedule as part of maintenance.
4. Are you licensed and insured, and can you show it? This is a yes-or-no question with paperwork attached. Anyone who hedges is telling you something.
5. Do you handle refrigeration and controls too? If you're a business, this determines whether you manage one contractor or three. Whoever handles your rooftop units, your walk-in cooler, and your building controls should ideally be the same team — that's how problems stop falling between the cracks.
